Vanderbilt Carriage Condos

The Vanderbilt Carriage House is the former garage and stable of the property that was once the Bogue Chitto estate of David Hennen Morris (a close friend of Franklin Roosevelt, who went on to become U.S. Ambassador to Belgium and minister to Luxembourg in the 1930s) and his wife, Alice Vanderbilt Shepard (granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt). Thoughtfully renovated and restored into two beautiful, spacious condos, each is available for weekly vacation rentals in 2016. The original estate, Bogue Chitto (a Louisiana Native American expression for “Brook of Shadows”), was built in 1888 by Mr. Morris’ father, as a summer residence. This original Carriage House for the estate was built more than 100 years ago after the original barn on the property was destroyed by fire. In fact, it may have been the first building constructed on Mount Desert Island specifically to accommodate both horses and cars (even before automobiles were permitted on the Island).

The two condos (“A” being the upper level; “B” the lower level) are lovely, comfortable accommodations rented separately or together. The Bogue Chitto community offers a shared private dock for guests to use, as well as shore access for kayaking. And the location couldn’t be better: directly across the road from the main entrance to Acadia National Park! It’s also just 2 miles to downtown Bar Harbor (about a 40 minute walk).

The “A” condo features 3 bedrooms: 2 kings and a bedroom with 4 twins (two daybeds with trundles), sleeping a total of 8 guests. There are 3 full bathrooms, designer kitchen, dining area, living room and a balcony overlooking the ocean.

The “B” condo features 3 bedrooms: 1 king, 1 queen, and a bedroom with 2 twins, sleeping a total of 6 guests. There are 3 bathrooms, lovely kitchen, dining area, living room and a screened patio facing the water. It also features garage space for your vehicle, or great storage for bikes and kayaks.

Both have full amenities: 2 flat screen TVs with cable, DVD player, WIFI, gas BBQ grill, washer/dryer, dishwasher. Click here for more complete list of household items/amenities.

Literally across the road from the main entrance to Acadia National, guests at the Vanderbilt Carriage House Condos will enjoy amazing access to Acadia. Several trails are located by the Visitor Center, at this entrance, so a morning hike is easiy accessible without getting in the car! You can also access the free Island Explorer bus right in front of the property, which will take you into downtown Bar Harbor (a 4 minute drive normally) if you don’t feel like walking. Enjoy a variety of restaurants, shops and activities in Bar Harbor, including whale watch cruises, lighthouse cruises, bus tours, bike rentals and much more!
