The Shore Path in Bar Harbor is a special place for vistors and local residents alike and very few properties become availalble to vacationers. That is why we are so pleased and excited to announce the addition of Reef Point Cottage to our vacation rental properties! The historical, original Reef Point Cottage was built in 1883 for Mary Cadwalader Jones, a close friend and literary agent of her sister in law, the novelist Edith Wharton. Mary's daughter, Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959), who also lived there, was the acclaimed landscape gardener who designed many of the famous estate gardens on Mount Desert Island, including Reef Point. Her most significant project was working with John D. Rockefeller Jr. on preserving and beautifying Acadia’s carriage roads. After the 1947 fire the original Reef Point Cottage was torn down and only the brick terrace at the south end of the current house (built in 1963) is original. Many of the plants from Reef Point ended up at the Asticou and Thuya Gardens. Today's Reef Point Cottage sits a ways back from the Shore Path, providing privacy and space for guests. The grounds are an eclectic blend of trees, shrubs and annuals. The property enjoys direct access to the Shore Path and the shore below, as well as wonderful views of the Porcupine Islands and ocean.
The interior design of Reef Point is in the mode of the classic summer cottage. Both modern and rustic, the decor and details of the cottage are exquisite and very comfortable.
There are 3 bedrooms at Reef Point. A queen bedroom resides in the first floor of the turret. There is a twins bedroom on the first floor with a private bathroom with shower. Also on the first/main floor is a full bathroom (tub/shower), a spacious great room, with living room, wonderful large kitchen and dining area. It's a great gathering room for meals and family entertaining.
The second floor of the turret features a master king bedroom with a private half bathroom. The cottage sleeps a maximum of 6 guests.
Amenities include cable TV in living room, WIFI, dishwasher, washer/dryer, gas BBQ, outdoor furnishings, croquets. Click here for more complete list of household items/amenities.
